What is a Reformed Evangelical?
The use of various terms and labels brings with
the risk of wrong definitions and
misconceptions. It also opens us up to the
charge of having a sectarian spirit. Yet, the fact
is we live in a time when corruptions and divisions in the
modern evangelical church are so widespread that
certain key distinctions should be carefully made.
We stand in the stream of historic Protestant
Orthodoxy. And while we are indebted to the
work done by the leaders of what is historically
known as the Reformation, and seek to build
upon their doctrinal foundation, we do not
intend the phrase reformed evangelical to be
limited to this. This phrase also expresses our
desire to see a great reformation and revival in
the evangelical world today.
We believe that
history is linear, and God is moving His people,
the church, from glory to glory.
With this understanding of progress, we do not
think that we have all the answers or that we
have arrived. We humbly implore God to grant
repentance, renewal, and greater doctrinal unity
to His body.
How Shall We Then Live?
If our first emphasis is the importance of a well-defined doctrinal foundation, the second
emphasis is for that theology to come out of our
fingertips. We desire our lives to evidence a
practical Christianity. Biblical teaching which
is not lived out is worse than useless;
consequently, we desire to grow in practical
obedience to the infallible Word of God. Our
duty to obey God is far from a millstone hung
around our necks; it is our light, our life, and
our delight. We seek to cultivate an atmosphere
and a church life that is over-flowing with
thankfulness, joy, goodness, beauty, and a deep
love of work, rest, peace and worship because we
know the truth, and have been set free.
Our third emphasis is on the family. We seek to
cultivate the Bible's high view of children. Paul
taught that the children of even one believing
parent are holy (1 Cor. 7:14); therefore we
acknowledge that our children belong to God
and stress the importance of a thoroughly
Christian education for them. They are
members of the Covenant with us, and so we
believe that God is for them, and so is worship
and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's
Supper.
